Lineage 2 Kamael: the winged race explained

The Lineage 2 Kamael

A raven, wings spread.

The Lineage 2 Kamael is a winged humanoid race added after the original five peoples, built around soul-powered skills, crossbows, and a class tree that is split by gender rather than by a shared fighter or mystic archetype.

Kamael were once human but were reshaped into short-lived, wing-bearing warriors, and they play unlike anyone else: they gather souls from their kills to fuel special abilities, they wield weapons other races cannot, and in many chronicles they could not take an ordinary subclass. If you want something mechanically different from the classic tree, the Kamael is the race to roll.

Where the Kamael came from

The Kamael arrived in their own dedicated chronicle rather than at the launch of the game, which is why they feel bolted onto a separate corner of the world. Lore aside, the practical point is that they were designed as a self-contained line: their starting classes, their weapons, and their signature soul mechanic were all new. On the retail timeline they are fully present from that chronicle through Interlude-adjacent updates, High Five, and into the modern Classic, Essence, and Aden branches, though each version tunes them differently. To see how they slot in beside the older peoples, the guide to the full Lineage 2 classes and races tree is the place to start, and the overview of the six races puts the Kamael in context next to the Human, Elf, and Dark Elf lines.

The Kamael class tree

Unlike other races, the Kamael does not offer the same options to every character. Male and female Kamael follow different branches, which is the single most important thing to understand before you create one. Everyone starts as a Soldier, chooses a Trooper or a Warder as the first profession, and then specialises. The table shows the main second-profession classes and the third-profession titles they grow into.

Line Second profession Third profession Role
Male, Trooper Berserker Doombringer Two-handed melee damage and tanking
Male, Warder Soul Breaker Soul Hound Hybrid melee and caster
Female, Trooper Soul Breaker Soul Hound Hybrid melee and caster
Female, Warder Arbalester Trickster Crossbow ranged damage

The Berserker is a durable two-handed melee fighter that can hold aggro and hit hard, evolving into the Doombringer with its powerful self-buffs. The Soul Breaker mixes melee strikes with damage spells and drains, spending accumulated souls on its strongest attacks, and becomes the Soul Hound. The Arbalester is the crossbow specialist, a ranged damage dealer that later becomes the Trickster with added trap and debuff tools. Because the roster is compact, the Kamael cover fewer roles than the Human tree, but each class is distinct and self-sufficient.

Souls, crossbows, and wings

What makes the Kamael feel different is their resource system. Many of their best skills consume souls, which build up as they fight, so a Kamael player learns to manage a small pool the way a mage manages mana. The Arbalester’s crossbow is a Kamael-flavoured weapon type, giving the race a ranged option that plays differently from the Elf’s bow, with its own reload rhythm. Their wings are largely cosmetic in normal play but reinforce the sense that this is a race apart. In several chronicles the Kamael also could not add a standard subclass or was restricted in how it did so, a limitation worth checking on your server before you plan a main. How the soul mechanic scales, and how each ability is levelled and enchanted, is part of the wider Lineage 2 skills system.

Kamael compared with the older races

Set against the Human, who can become anything from a Gladiator to a Bishop, the Kamael trades breadth for identity. There is no Kamael healer and no Kamael crafter, so a Kamael leans on parties and the wider economy for support and gear just as the aggressive Dark Elf does. If you want the sharp burst of a caster, the Spellhowler on The Lineage 2 Dark Elf is a better fit; if you want a full support toolkit, an Elf or Human serves you better. The Kamael’s appeal is its unique feel: soul management, crossbows, and a tight set of hybrid classes that reward learning them well rather than offering endless choice.

Should you play a Kamael?

Roll a Kamael if you want a race that plays by its own rules and you enjoy managing a resource on top of the usual buffs and shots. The Berserker and Doombringer suit players who like being in the thick of melee, the Soul Breaker rewards a hybrid style that blends hits and spells, and the Arbalester and Trickster give the game its distinctive crossbow damage. Just remember the gender-split tree, so decide the class you want before you pick the character’s gender. On the mobile and simplified modern versions the Kamael may look and level differently, but on the classic PC chronicles it remains the game’s most mechanically unusual race. For the deeper systems that make each of these classes tick, our overview of the world of Aden ties the race choice into the rest of the game.
